The answer my friends is not blowing up children in the wind
Rather than blame weak and insufficient gun regulation laws, Republican lawmakers have blamed the school shooting in Texas on mental illness, doors that don’t lock, doors that lock, teachers, critical race theory, pandemic lockdowns, mythical police defunding, the FBI, immigrants, woke mobs, lack of Christian prayers ion schools, not enough cops, video games, cannabis users, aid to Ukraine, and guns in Chicago.
They’re following their longstanding practice of diversion till public attention to the matter dies down.
Today there were only two fresh multiple murders so far.
1) Ames, Iowa:
The man who killed two women before turning the gun on himself outside of an Ames church had previously been accused of domestic violence and sexual abuse, and had once been ordered to complete an anger management course, but was still able to legally own and carry firearms in the state.
As we was pending trial, no law was in place to protect the public pre-conviction, so he shot his ex-gf (one of his pending court appearances) and another woman, before killing himself. Iowa used to have a law that would have prevented him from buying a gun, but the legislature eliminated it in 2021. It sure seems like there was a giant red flag here.
2) Racine, Wisconsin:
Two people were injured at a cemetery south of Milwaukee on Thursday as multiple shots were fired in the direction of a funeral service Thursday afternoon, police said.
The funeral was for a man the Racine police killed last month for illegally carrying a gun. and trying to evade capture by running away.
And Senator Lindsey Graham tweeted today in favor of an armed guard presence at schools: “Schools should be treated like courthouses, banks, capital buildings, etc when it comes to security.”
Notably, guns are banned at NRA conventions.
And Rep. Billy Long upped the Excuse Meter further Wednesday, claiming the shootings are the result of abortions. Apparently abortions devalue human life. Unlike killing a half million Iraqis after their leader never attacked the US.
Let’s be clear: 18 is too young an age to allow everyone easy access to high powered weapons. There may be millions of responsible gun owning families like those who hunt for food but everyone knows lots of 18 year old males do stupid things like drinking too much, hazing at fraternities, driving too fast or inebriated, and acting weird around women they have a crush on. Sure, there’s dumb and dangerous things done by older guys, but the majority of these mass shootings - especially shootings in schools and churches - are done by guys 18 years old or younger.
Raise the age limit. Require universal background checks. Limit access to rapid-fire semi-automatics, maybe to people who’ve passed a series of training courses. Red-flag anyone that’s been violent or threatened violence - before they’ve been convicted. There’s no risk to anyone’s freedoms. Lots of countries have done this without their government moving into fascism and it’s worked as prescribed: it reduces mass shootings.
We don’t need an Emmett Till re-do. Doctors can describe quite well how supersonic bullets explode human organs beyond repair. ((shudder)) Several define it perfectly here.
If you have the stomach for intense language and unflinching critique about guns as a moral issue, the Rude Pundit provides it in full gory with an added big swipe at the hypocrisy of the Southern Baptist Church leadership.
Bill Lueders offers a humorous take on the efforts of the greatest carny on earth. I should be worried, as I just received my first such email today.
Another proud insurrectionist pleads guilty to a felony. And another former Trump appointee who refused a Congressional subpoena gets arrested for it. The committee’s public hearings begin next week.
I don’t understand why this old classic is now considered offensive to some. I think it’s perfect for now.
