Apparently at least 330,000 Russian citizens aren’t afraid to sign their names to a petition opposing Little Vladdie’s Soviet resurrection wet dream.
One petition, started by a prominent human rights advocate, Lev Ponomavyov, garnered over 150,000 signatures within several hours and more than 330,000 by the end of the day. More than 250 journalists put their names on an open letter decrying the aggression. Another one was signed by some 250 scientists, while 194 municipal council members in Moscow and other cities signed a third.
“I’m worried about the people very much, I’m worried to tears,” said Zoya Vorobey, a resident of Korolyov, a town outside Moscow, her voice cracking. “I’ve been watching television since this morning, every minute, to see if anything changes. Unfortunately, nothing.”
Several Russian celebrities and public figures, including some working for state TV, spoke out against the attack. Yelena Kovalskaya, director of a state-funded Moscow theater, announced on Facebook she was quitting her job, saying “it’s impossible to work for a killer and get paid by him.”
“I know that right now many of you feel desperation, helplessness, shame over Vladimir Putin’s attack on the friendly nation of Ukraine. But I urge you not to despair,” human rights activist Marina Litvinovich said in a video statement on Facebook, calling for mass protests Thursday evening.
“We, the Russian people, are against the war Putin has unleashed. We don’t support this war, it is being waged not on our behalf,” Litvinovich said.
But the authorities were having none of that.
In Moscow and other cities, they moved swiftly to crack down on critical voices. Litvinovich was detained outside of her residence shortly after posting the protest call. OVD-Info, a rights group that tracks political arrests, reported that 1,745 people in 54 cities had been detained by Thursday evening, at least 957 of them in Moscow.
Russia’s Investigative Committee issued a warning Thursday afternoon reminding Russians that unauthorized protests are against the law.
Roskomnadzor, state communications and media watchdog, demanded that Russian media use “information and data they get only from official Russian sources.”
But Russia is now making it clear, they’re willing to negotiate. AFTER they eliminate the Ukraine government. Or in other words, after they kidnap the government, hold them hostage, then the puppets cave in to the Russian demands. Which, of course, requires that they surrender any hope of joining NATO, or any other alliance with the West.
And what kind of vengeance will Little Vladdy inflict on the Ukraine government leaders?
Or on the Russian people in Russia who are protesting their tiny tyrant?
As I stated before the war was launched by Russia, Putin is gambling on winning this in less than 2 weeks. And it appears right now that he will succeed.
It appears the Olympic Games aren’t over till the Chinese quit acting like bad imperialists, following in the footsteps of Russia in Ukraine and the US in Iraq.
Ever since FDR pushed the New Deal to rebuild the country during the Great Depression, conservatives have tried to chip away at it. Now, one of the most inept members of Congress in history is trying to reverse it entirely.
Madison Cawthorn (R-Delusional), elected by faking military credentials (which used to be considered the kiss of death for a candidate) is pushing a bill that will never get a hearing unless the GOP regains control of the House.
Among its features: providing incentives to get seniors back to work while eliminating Social Security.
Yes, folks, that’s why he makes the big bucks.
You take 15 boxes of documents to your home, with classified documents aboard? There’s a little tut-tutting about that.
But if you’re a woman and send 3 emails that are classified info? You become the most investigated person in US history. And you testify without resorting to the Fifth Amendment. And no one finds a crime worth prosecuting.
The last president also tore documents in half and flushed some down the toilet on several occasions. Without getting penalized at all.
Do we fully understand what’s occurred this week and over the last 5 years? Do you ‘get it?’
You can break any law, violate national security, propose killing off NATO, cut off Congressional mandated oreign aid, break any treaty, jail/threaten to jail/assassinate your political opponents, give aid, comfort and encouragement to enemies and to violent people guilty of assaulting police officers, and try to steal an election by lying constantly. If you possess enormous wealth and are white and male.
Understand?
Lawyers and pundits will say that’s not how it is anymore. But they’re wrong. This is exactly how it is in Russia. And the United States. There are rules for the middle class, the working class and the poor. But the rules for the ultra wealthy - especially the white male ones - are only suggestions that don’t ever get enforced.
As the Ukrainian citizens get this terrible wake-up call, I’ll save a more thorough critique for another day. For now, it’s sufficient to say that this Nudge-Nudge-Wink-Wink- Democracy Pretense really sucks.
