Because of that, I was (and to a certain extent still am) convinced that his entire presidential bid was a publicity stunt that got adopted by movers and shakers in the GOP who believed he would be a useful puppet. Movers and shakers who now have become the puppets, and guess who is the puppet master...

I'd seen the first part of that before. And yeah, he's close to McMahon. Vince's wife Linda headed Trump's Small Business Administration for 2 years, stepping down to head a Trump Super PAC with Larry Kudlow as the Vice Chair. They raised $83 million for his 2020 campaign.
